DIY: Capping the night with a Sweet ‘n Spicy Greenish Stuff Detox Face Mask!

While everyone was deep in sleep last night, I decided to savor the tranquility by enjoying a detox mask and a warm cup of tea. It’s been a stressful week for me and my skin, and a relaxing mask + tea is the closest I can get to meditation. Since I just recovered from a minor breakout, I thought of whipping up a quick detox mask to suck what’s left of those pimple-causing suckers under my skin!

Do you know that most “green smoothie” powders are good ingredients for detox masks?

Chlorophyll found in greens — and your green smoothie powder — is great in detoxifying the body, particularly the blood. Similarly on the skin, it can help ‘suck out’ toxic residues and reduce inflammation. If your green powder contains other super greens like chlorella and spirulina, even better!

I’m currently loving the Ultimate Green Drink from Good4You Herbals on etsy in my smoothies (and now on my face!). To me, detox should be done inside and out. Slurp ‘em and slap ‘em.

Sweet ‘n Spicy Greenish Stuff Detox Face Mask
You can simply add the green powder to honey or aloe vera if you just want a normal detoxifying mask. But because I wanted to brighten my skin, I added a few sprinkles of nutmeg and cinnamon. The spices can irritate sensitive skin so be sure to do a patch test first.

  • 1/2 tsp Green Powder
  • 1/8 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 tblsp honey
If you find the texture too thick and hard to mix, you can add a few drops of water. Since I was too lazy to go to the sink and I happened to be drinking tea, I added tea instead. Ha!

Detox the skin to reap long-term benefits
Detox masks (and products) like this won’t magically cure acne or erase wrinkles overnight. Well, they might help heal pimples as some anti-acne products actually contain chlorella. But better set your expectations low. The bottom line is, the effects may not be immediate but green detox masks can contribute to long-term wellness of the skin. For one, when the skin is free from toxins, it can absorb the rest of your skincare products better.

Have you tried any other detoxifying facial mask before?

This is so weird!!! While in bed last night (with insomnia), I was just thinking whether it was okay to use green powder for the face!!! The green powder I have is from Z Natural Foods. Their blend is different, but should be okay. Next time I’ll look into the etsy one. Thanks for the confirmation and “recipe.”
One time I was drinking a cup of roasted dandelion root tea. It’s known to be a detoxifier, so out of boredom I just grabbed the leftover warm tea bag from the mug and rubbed it all over my face…does that count as a mask? Heheh. Of course I can’t make any claims since that was a one time thing.

Hmmm… what can I say? Great minds think alike! :D

I remembered you saying previously that you’ve got sensitive skin so you might want to skip the nutmeg and cinnamon. But you definitely can try the green powder. If you use clay masks, you can add some of the green powder for some extra detox oomph in your clay mask.

And yup, I think that leftover tea is considered a mask. I do that all the time. :p

I think I have been detoxing my skin lately on a regular basis without knowing it, haha~ My diy ingredients are green tea powder and yoghurt. I don’t add anything extra, because my yoghurt is a big tub, and I don’t eat yoghurt. It would take about two weeks for me to finish it.

Oh, I love yogurt for the skin. It’s great in evening out the skin tone + the green tea powder. I wrote about a similar mask before and it’s one of my favorites. :)

    • Vivi says:

Hi Swati, I don’t celebrate it anymore because I’m away from my family and Hubby doesn’t celebrate it.

The green powder is a green smoothie powder. It’s like pulverized vegetables and stuff. :)

i cant imagine the cinnamon smell on my face >< i have been lazy in DIY mask, to save the trouble of mixing and washing stuff, and ..the risk of it dripping. my current favorite is sheet mask, straight out of packet, and easy to dispose!

haha, I know… the cinnamon sometimes smells like ‘saliva’ to me. I don’t know if it’s just me? Haha…
I actually miss sheet masks, too. I used to buy boxes of them and do the treatment while watching TV. So convenient… *sigh*

    Hi Vivi!

Do you follow a specific diet for maintaining your skin? I have recently included greens and fish in my diet, but am wondering whether I can still stick to noodles/ white rice instead of converting to brown rice or other grains as my staple.

And can I still have my chocolate a few times in a week? :( I have already given up on ice cream entirely but I still can’t give up my chocolates (and cupcakes) :(

Hi Helena, I used to follow a special diet but not anymore. However, I will be consulting a nutritionist soon (mostly for health) so I might follow a special diet soon, too.

Previously, I tried the Blood Type Diet (Type A). My diet then became high in greens (really high) and mostly just fish. If you haven’t read my review, you might want to check it out starting with this post: http://ecobeautysecrets.com/2011/12/5-step-holistic-acne-treatment-getting-back-my-smooth-skin-naturally/

Currently, I try to avoid big servings of dairy and beef especially before my period as I’ve proven they cause me to breakout.

Yes, you can still keep your rice and noodles as long as you increase your intake of veggies (both raw and lightly cooked). If you don’t see any improvement, then that’s the only time you can try experimenting with other grains.

Chocolates: I LOVE CHOCOLATES. But I learned to curb by cravings by taking healthier alternatives. If you follow my page on facebook, I posted about this chocolate oatmilk drink that’s been helping me cope with chocolate addiction, haha. At least it’s non-dairy and isn’t really as high in sugar as the conventional chocolate so it doesn’t break me out. I mix it with frozen banana, chia seeds and supergreens powder and it’s enough to satisfy my cravings (plus the health benefits!). Tastes like the real thing :D

WOWWWW your transformation was amazing babe!! GOOD JOB ON THAT!

i don’t really have a problem with acne, but around my menstruation.. BAM. I usually get it on my lower cheeks only ;( it clears up in 4 days max but the scars they leave.. devastating :(

Do u know of any food/ supplements that one should take to prevent hormonal breakouts? And can u recommend me a good fish oil supplement? I have friends who tell me horror stories of fish oil breaking them out instead of helping them!

        Helena

        • Vivi says:

Thank you! I was very scared that my skin wouldn’t calm down. Now, my skin is pimple-free except for the occasional lone tiny zit. :) I also get a pimple or two during or before my menstruation when I indulge on food that I’m ‘allergic’ to. The other day, I had steak and slices of icecream + milk shake and I now have a small pimple near my nose. But when I eat clean right before my period, I rarely get any flareups.

Hmmm, I don’t like messing up with my hormones directly. For example, I read that Evening Primrose Oil helps BUT some people, after taking it for a long time, suddenly experience really, really bad breakouts.

You shouldn’t look for Fish Oil supplements but for ‘Omega 3′ supplements. Anyway, reason why people get breakouts from Omega 3 supplements is because:
          1. Bad product/bad brand
          2. Allergic to Fish Oil because that’s the common source of Omega 3. Vegetarian source is Flaxseed Oil.
          3. Simple purging as Omega 3 moisturizes skin from deep within
          4. They don’t know how to take it (a good dose enough to show some effects on the skin is about 2000mg+ a day. When I’m not lazy, I take 3000mg + )

The one I’m taking now is Nordic Naturals Omega 3 from iherb.com. It’s also made from Fish Oil but the Omega 3 content is high. I also bought Salmon Oil from Holland and Barret. I pop 2 capsules of Nordic in the morning and 2 capsules of Salmon for dinner.

          • Helena says:

Aww thank you for your extensive advice and recommendation! My friend recommended Carlson’s cod liver oil though!
I’m so sorry for the deluge of questions, but can I know, is Omega- 3 the cause of you not breaking out as bad anymore? Is it a form of maintenance for you after clearing up with the blood type diet?

And why do you take a separate oil and not just depend on the nordic naturals omega 3 capsules?

            Helena

            • Vivi says:

              No worries. :)

I don’t think lack of Omega-3 was the main cause of my breakout but ‘allergy’ (for the lack of better word to use) to certain food and bad diet causing hormonal imbalance. Apparently, when the liver is congested, the body finds it hard to get rid of the extra hormones that usually causes breakouts. But lack of Omega-3 in my old diet probably exacerbated my body’s inflammation and also prevented my skin from healing as quickly (previously, it took ages for my scars to heal).

I’m not a fan of cod liver oil so I wouldn’t know. But I was told by my nutritionist previously that taking especially made Omega-3 supplements compared to normal Fish Oil that happens to contain certain amounts of Omega 3 is better. Only reason why I take salmon oil is because I bought 2 bottles by impulse and didn’t want to waste them. :D But if I didn’t, I’ll probably just take one brand.

              • Helena says:

Thanks so much for your help, Vivi!
I shall be purchasing some omega-3 supplements, either nordic naturals or Kordels!
Do you know the causes of temples breakouts? My best friend has flawless skin elsewhere but breakouts terribly ONLY at her temples! Its quite a pity really and she has tried sooo many topical remedies to no avail. It has to be internal causes right?

                • Vivi says:

Sorry for the late reply, I was on vacation :)

Temple breakouts are definitely most likely internal. I had them probably about four months ago? Rest of my face was clear but my temples kept having pimples that had blackheads. I read that it’s due to hormonal imbalance which might be true in my case because my monthly cycle wasn’t as regular during those months. But my diet was also pretty bad. :/
