Dry Brush your Cellulites and Toxins Away!

What in the frog’s wart is dry brushing? That was the first thing that came to mind when I heard of some eco beauties talking about how they got rid of cellulite, flaky skin, chicken skin and a host of other skin and body banes by dry brushing daily. When I finally learned what dry brushing is, thanks to Google, Youtube and a couple of holistic health magazines and books, I decided to jump in the dry brushing bandwagon and see for myself what all the fuss and buzz were about.

What is Dry Brushing?
Simple. It’s brushing dry skin. With a dry brush. But don’t rush brushing your backside just yet. Dry brushing follows a simple, basic process as detailed on another post, How to Dry Brush Your Body. But for now, I’ll be focusing solely on the benefits of dry brushing– then you can decide whether it’s something you’d like to do, too!

What are the Benefits of Dry Brushing?
Here are some of the most common perks of dry brushing:

  • exfoliates the skin and unclogs the pores making absorption of skin products much easier
  • helps improve blood circulation which in turn keeps the skin younger and firmer and less prone to damage
  • manages the circulation and flow of toxic wastes in the body and activates the lymph nodes which dispose these toxins
  • helps to distribute fats evenly into the skin
  • stimulates nerve endings and helps firm muscles

Why I started Dry Brushing
For the past year or so, I’ve been noticing the dreaded marshmallow bag forming around my upper thighs. I’m also prone to scaly skin and I get KP (Keratosis Pilaris) or chicken skin flare ups every once in a while.

Results from Dry Brushing
I have been dry brushing on and off for close to a year now. Although not necessarily “miraculous”, I’ve experienced some promising results. I notice my upper thighs looking slightly firmer and my originally very dry skin responding better to moisturizing body oils and lotion whenever I could dry brush continuously for two weeks. Dry brushing also helps me manage the chicken skin on my outer arms.

When I first tried dry brushing, I felt a deep itch throughout my body which oddly, I couldn’t scratch away. I read that it’s actually my blood working in there. I still feel this odd sensation whenever I go back to dry brushing after missing it for a long time

Although Not a Miracle Cure, It’s Worth a Try
If like me, you find it hard to incorporate even simple exercises in your daily life, I think dry brushing is a MUST — but still, don’t treat it as complete alternative to working out. No, no. To get the most out of dry brushing, be sure to couple it with a good product (aside from maintaining a healthy lifestyle, of course). For example, if you’re doing it to help prevent or manage cellulite, follow it up with a good firming lotion or oil blend.

      Hi Lynn, The best way to find out is to test the brush on the back of your hand before you buy it. It should feel firm enough yet not give you white scratch marks. Also, dry brushing is meant to be done with light pressure, not scrub-your-shoe kind of brushing. 😀 I’ll be writing about Dry Brushing 101 on my next post.

    I totally need this. I feel like I’ve had cellulite all my life. It slightly improved when I was doing strength-training (I’ve read cellulite and stretch marks are less visible with you tone up). I think dry brushing helps in skin toning. Some have similar results when massaging with seaweed bar soap. I definitely have to try this…looking forward to your next post!

      Unfortunately, dry Brushing will only strengthen your skin to minimize the appearance of cellulite but it will not totally get rid of it. From my experience, I stopped exercising and noticed my cellulite worsened even though I was dry brushing. So it’s still better to exercise for deeper fat stimulation and dry brush to stimulate the upper layers of the fat. It’s like attacking fats from both ends of the pole. :)
