Review: Skin Apotheke Rejuvenating Eye Creme – Etsy

“Love at first sight” is how I’ll describe the first time I came across Skin Apotheke’s enticingly packaged handmade skin and hair care products on Etsy. Not only are the colorful & vibrant photos a joy to look at, each of the products has a very decent list of ingredients and promising claims. And since I’m constantly on the lookout for something to care for the delicate skin around my peepers, I immediately zoomed in on Skin Apotheke’s Rejuvenating Eye Creme!

My First Ayuverdic Beauty Product
Skin Apotheke offers a range of fresh handmade skin and hair care products based on the Ayuverdic principles from India. For those are not familiar with the term, Ayuverda is a holistic approach to health (and beauty, in this case) that originated from India. Thus, Skin Apotheke products are made with natural ingredients, organic when possible and are free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, artificial fragrances, dyes, petroleum based ingredients or synthetics.

Natural & Organic
According to the product description on its Etsy page, the Skin Apotheke Rejuvenating Eye Creme is 100% Natural, 100% Preservative-Free and 95% Organic. Of course it can’t be without preservatives but it does use natural preservatives like grapeseed oil and rosemary extract. It contains Vit C esters to brighten the skin and help with collagen production. Gotu Kola, a common ingredient in ayuverdic skincare products, has rejuvenating properties. Sweet Almond Oil & Evening Primrose oil both help maintain ample moisture levels while carrot oil and rose essential oil both have anti-aging properties that help prevent and reduce wrinkles.

Light Yet Decadent Texture
This eye cream has a very light, almost gel-like texture than easily absorbs into the skin. It’s very much like Clinique’s All About Eyes so if you’re a fan yet planning to switch to an organic and natural alternative, the the Rejuvenating Eye Creme would be a good bet. Very little of this cream goes a long way. When I first used it, I got over-excited and applied too much so I got myself a millia seed after a couple of days. But lesson learned. Now, I only apply a very small dot under each eye and it keeps the skin under my eyes soft the entire day.

Hydrates & Moisturizes Well
I love how fast this eye cream sinks into the skin. Probably, the hydrating and moisturizing effects appear more dramatic in my case since the skin around my eyes is usually very dry with noticeable fine lines. This is one of the products in my Beijing beauty travel kit and it definitely didn’t disappoint me. My eye area stayed moisturized and well-hydrated even in Beijing’s dry autumn weather.

Brightens The Eye Area But…
Since it helps to instantly soften fine lines,  it makes my eyes look brighter and less tired. However, I don’t think it did anything for my dark circles–but it’s probably because my dark circles and generally due to lack of sleep. This might be better for those whose dark circles are caused by sun damage, especially if used in conjunction with Skin Apotheke’s Organic Anti-Aging Eye & Pigmentation serum, and dullness due to dry skin.

Layering With Other Products
I really don’t mind using this as a stand-alone eye cream, especially during hectic days. But I usually use it on top of my other eye serums like the MVO Eye Serum and GoW Cellular Eye Complex which are more potent in addressing individual concerns like sagging skin and blueish dark circles. The SA Rejuvenating Eye Creme to me, is a good cream to seal the goodness of other serums with lighter textures.

Remember to Depot
My only qualm about this eye cream is that it comes in a jar and so I’ll have to dip my finger into it each time. It can be unhygienic especially so that it’s an all-natural product which is more prone to contamination. I suggest to depot smaller amounts into a separate container and refill only when needed. Using a small spatula to scoop out the amount of cream needed for each application will also help prevent bacterial contamination.

Toss Or Keep?
At US$24 for a 1 oz jar, the Skin Apotheke Rejuvenating Eye Creme is definitely a good deal and steal. One tub can last for about a year. I only got the sample size which cost me just US$8 including the shipment to Singapore and since I only need a tiny dot per application, I still have about a quarter in the jar left which should last me for a few more months.  Although as of now, it’s still not an all-around eye cream for me, I really love how hydrating and luxurious it feels on my skin. And for someone like me who spends most of her day in front of the computer, a reasonably priced eye cream that’s mild enough yet delivers ample hydration is a rare gem.

enticing indeed :) but i will definitely buy it if it can help with my dark circles..a jar can last y0u f0r a year? an0ther plus p0int c0z i read that m0st 0rganic skincare sh0uld have a shel-life of 6mths max.

    • Vivi

Actually, I’m not very comfortable with the 1 year storage life. So I would suggest you buy the sample size first. The sample is quite a LOT and it should last long enough for you to know whether it works for you or not. The sample, including shipping fee, costs less than SGD$10. :)

  • Hiddy

Very interesting company! Thank you for reviewing them. I think I am going to try out some of their serums =)

    • Vivi

Hi Hiddy, love that Skin Apotheke’s products are all handmade with love. :)

  • Ria

Thank you Vivi for your review, I will for sure keep the container aspect in mind for the next batch :)
Btw:Interesting about the shelf life….max is one year ( which you will get when you use this 2ce a day but lot of people use eye creams through out the day in which case will be consumed withen the year) and that is due to the long shelf life of all natural and organic shea butter which has shelf life of about 2-3 years. It is a common misconception that all organic products have max shelf life of 6 months, that depends on the co. itself, quality of ingredients used, correct storage etc.

    • Vivi

Hi Ria, thanks for dropping by. :) I love this eye cream overall and been using it consistently since I bought it a couple of months ago.

I have a jar of raw Shea Butter on one of my shelves, too, and I’ve had it for more than a year now and it’s still fresh as new– I don’t doubt that it prolongs the life of the Rejuvenating Eye Creme along with grape seed oil and rosemary extract. But I’m more concerned about bacterial contamination, thus I mentioned about the packaging. Because the jar needs to be opened and finger dipped into the product during each use, it’s easier to introduce bacteria into the product unless it’s handled with extra care (eg. depotting into smaller containers, using spatula to scoop the cream instead of using fingers, etc).

I’m wondering, though, if you think it will affect the product if it’s kept inside the fridge? Since I’ve been depotting mine in smaller amounts, I’m planning to keep the original jar in the fridge but am afraid it’ll affect the products effectiveness and consistency. Do you think it’s a good idea?

I did an Ayurvedic assessment once for my ideal diet..and I was very depressed with the results. I’m basically deprived of most foods, and can only eat gentle, bland, vegetarian and practically raw or steamed stuff. Of course I’m ignoring this plan..hahah. Anway…it’s cool that you’re enjoying the benefits of this holistic eye cream. I do wish there was just one universal eye treatment that can address every eye concern because I don’t think I have the patience to layer eye serums/creams. The label looks really bright and colorful and does remind me of Indian festive decor. I will definitely look into Skin Apotheke’s other products.

    • Vivi

Haha! Yes, diet assessments are indeed a bummer sometimes. I’ll share about my own experience on another post. Now, I’m just watching over my diet on my own and making sure I eat both meat and vegetables. Hey, you might want to ask Ria, the creator of the Skin Apotheke line, for some advice. I think you might want to try the Ubtan Mask. :)

  • Alexandra

I nearly bought this product but then settled for GoW. Will definitely give it a try. Any before and after pics? 😛

    • Vivi

Unfortunately, none. Haha. Not good in taking before and after photos like you and Sesame. I always forget! :p But anyway, the difference isn’t as dramatic as compared to, let’s say, a lightening serum or cream for pigmentations because there isn’t a definite marker to spot the differences with. It’s really just nice and moisturizing. :)

  • Hollie

this is the first time I’ve seen/heard of this product. It looks really interesting. Awesome in depth review.

    • Vivi

Hi Hollie, glad you enjoyed the review. :)

  • Amanda

Thank you for another great review. Glad that something has worked for you. You know it can be darn difficult to find something that works for our eyes :) But I doubt whether it would work on mild static wrinkles like mine.

    • Vivi

Thanks, Amanda! I’m really baffled by the static wrinkles you always talk about ’cause when I saw one photo of your eyes you posted on your blog, I couldn’t pin point where the wrinkles were!

      • Amanda

Don’t judge based on that photo (it failed to capture the reality)! My eye wrinkles are really there on my eyes. They just don’t have that horrible wrinkly looking. But for me, they are ugly enough…

  • Angie

I’ve just placed an order for this eye cream based on your review (I must say their whole array of products look very interesting & the philosophy sensible. Plus I like the idea of supporting more indie companies like this rather than multi-nationals) hope it helps to improve the look of the fine lines around my eyes!

Have you tried anything else from Skin Apotheke?
    Angie recently blogged..Have A Cuppa

    • Vivi

I’ve tried the Hair Oil (which I like) and the hair mask which is just okay.

With regards to skincare, I’ve tried the cleanser which does a good job in cleaning my face but I can’t use it too often as it dries my skin. I’ve also tried the anti-pigmentation serum which unfortunately didn’t work.

But overall, I think Skin Apotheke is one of the best indie skincare products on Etsy. The descriptions of the products over promise sometimes (which makes me a bit uncomfortable) but generally, their products are of good quality.

    HI VIVI!

FINALLY! Someone in Singapore who’s heard of skin apotheke!!!
Have you heard/ or know of anyone who tried their clarifying ubtan cleanser/scrub?
I’ve been meaning to get it, I really wanna try this out for my red acne marks which seems to take foreeeveerrrr to go away!

been hearing so much goodness about this old-age indian tradition (ubtan face mask for brides), and to have something ready-made in the bottle makes application so much easier. just afraid that it’ll be too harsh for my skin as i’ve had problems with over-exfoliation before.

    • Vivi

Hihi, I learned about this brand for about 2 years ago :)

And you’re in luck! I have tried the Ubtan cleanser. I bought it a few months ago.

I wouldn’t say it gets rid of acne marks but it’s definitely a mild mask because the particles are very fine, and the scrub doesn’t sting the skin. It makes my skin soft the morning after. Obviously, like most exfoliating scrubs, you should use it only about 1-2x a week to avoid over-exfoliation.

I mix it with honey or yogurt depending on what’s available.
